Rachel Liu — Media & Communication Portfolio
Digital illustration & mixed media narratives
This portfolio presents a series of visual experiments exploring self-identity, gender, and personal freedom through conceptual imagery. Each composition aims to balance narrative emotion with minimalistic visual storytelling.

I use stage lighting to highlight the girl being bound by the surrounding comments

Dark clouds as the foreground highlight the light in the distance

I drew the main content in Procreate and then collaged it onto the background of the TV

I use the contrast of black, white and gray to highlight the subject

I used the warm light outside the room to contrast with the light inside the room.

The chains show what people want girls to do, and the girls on the stage are doing what they want

The faces around the girl symbolize the various disciplines she receives from the people around her

The girl running on the circular grass symbolizes the girl’s pursuit of freedom and individuality

The growth of a girl is like a packaged doll, which has been set

The paper crane represents the girl’s true personality and her inner pursuits

The paper crane = the girl’s original intention. The swirl = the confusion caused by others
